The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou is a 2004 masterpiece movie by film auteur Wes Anderson. The film follow the talismanic Bill Murray as the eccentric oceanographer Zissou on an expedition to document/destroy the mythic jaguar shark. This homage to famed French oceanographer Cousteau also stars Cate Blanchett, Willem Dafoe, Michael Gambon, Jeff Goldblum, Anjelica Huston, Owen Wilson, Bud Cort, and the resounding Seu Jorge. Like all Wes Anderson films, it is a wonder of cinematography that enchants the eye and hypnotizes the imagination with impeccable scenery and impregnably wild characters. Inevitably though, one character rises above and wins our hearts, Pelé.
Pelé is as soulful and brooding as the film’s tone. But he is also as energetic and witty as the film’s dialogue. Seu, holds nothing back in this film; his acting is on par with the heavyweights that accompany him on the screen. Seu’s singing voice is teeming with sincerity and honed to perfection during his time homeless in Rio de Janeiro. Seu Jorge is a soft-spoken and talented musician tugging at our heartstrings and making this character come to life. Wes Anderson proves himself once more to be a virtuoso of the cinematic arts. Life Aquatic is an enigma.
Rest assured you are in safe hands with Pelé Dos Santos, Steve Zissou, Kingsley Zissou, and the crew of the Belafonte as it sails the tranquil and magical seas of Wes Anderson’s imagination. And all to the serendipitous tunes of Seu Jorge.
