Paris is a city drowning in its own decadence, or perhaps more appropriately it is a city drunk on its own particularly intoxicating brand of charm. But let us be honest and not romanticize what is possibly the most over-romanticized city on earth. Paris is a city for people with means. That is to say Paris has an underbelly that expands generations. Generations of struggle, discrimination, poverty, and hopelessness. Paris may be a decadent city but it is defined by the struggle that comes with modern life in the city. Paris is a city enduring a perpetual state of denial. They believe that the present is the always the golden age of Paris but that could not possibly be the case.
Walking in Paris is an adventure because Paris has absolutely no tolerance or sympathy for the lost and expresses outright hostility towards anglophones. The thing about Paris is that the nonchalance, which charms so many people, can also drive others crazy. Yes, Paris is pretentious and bit condescending but the thing is Paris isn’t in your face about it. Paris is a hipster that is too hipster to tell you it’s a hipster.
