Franklin

2/2/2018

By Ahmed Latif

Growing up, I loved Franklin the turtle.  So much so, that we named all our family pets using that name or other derivatives of it, Frank, Franky, Francis, etc.  I loved Franklin so much that to this very day I still refer to all tortoises as turtles.  I loved that absolute optimism of Franklin, scared or not, he was still hopeful.
My change, however, would turn this lovely show on its head.  Why you may ask?  I will answer because the show made no sense in the real world but occasionally tried, so I say don’t try at all.  I want Franklin to stop pretending like he fits in a forest where he is literally the only one with a name, everyone else is just called by the name of their species.  I want Franklin to stop pretending he’s a turtle, I bet he can’t even swim.  Franklin does not fit in, and you want to know why?  Because Franklin is living in an oppressive forest state.  My change would be to make Franklin, a freedom fighter.

A bit far for such a whimsical show but I want Franklin to battle against the corporate overlords who are robbing everyone in the forest of their names and therefore their identity.  I want him to battle against mislabelling identity, a tortoise is not a turtle.  I want Franklin to fight for originality in a world obsessed with conformity.  Finally, I want Franklin to speak for the environment being robbed of a voice.  In short, I want Franklin to save the world with his infallible optimism.
