Since the theme for this issue is vibe, I have to be completely honest and say there is no one creating art right now that I vibe with more than Chance The Rapper. And I think this may apply for a lot of people. Chance The Rapper is more than a rapper but also more than a persona or a brand or some comic book character. In fact I think he is some kind of real-life super-hero but is just as surprised as we all are by the feats he pulls off.
His song Same Drugs has echoes of Shakespearean poetry for the 21st Century but to him, it’s just a meaningful and soulful song. He makes great art, not as a statement but because he wants to; which is so undeniably refreshing. He doesn’t make a statement with his art for the sake of anything other than because he believes it and he wants to.
He shares an unfiltered vibe with his audience in an era when we overshare and over-engineer our online vibe. And the best part of all this is that I think Chance The Rapper is still growing and evolving, both as a person and as an artist. His easygoing vibes and personality instead of a persona are what make him magic. The kind of magic you dream of in a utopia. But waking up and finding that magic in real life is just really … really liberating.
