When it comes to the discussion of personalities that are larger than life, it is very difficult to argue against sports being inundated with wild (and likeable) characters. No amount of corporate whitewashing or tasteless sponsorships can undermine the gold mine of characters and caricatures that is the world of sports. With three gold medals in the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome, she was considered the fastest woman on earth. A civil rights and track legend, she won over spectators and athletes alike.

He is a legend that transcends boxing. He fought for civil rights and against the war in Vietnam. He brought politics and injustice to the forefront of mainstream sports.
3. Roger Federer (Madeleine’s Pick)
The greatest tennis player ever is from Switzerland. He is not as tall, lanky, or muscular as other Tennis stars but his technical skill and aggressiveness are unmatched.
4. Roberto Carlos (Rahman’s Pick)
This soccer player was a multiple time World Cup winner with Brazil and was part of the team of stars that elevated Real Madrid to the level of galactic stardom: los galacticos
5. Igor Larionov (Zurab’s Pick)
A Soviet hockey player who also played in the NHL. He was a velvet smooth passer and one of the best assisters of all-time.
6. Davor Šuker (Gabriel’s Pick)
A Croatian soccer player that led his country to the semifinals in the 1998 World Cup and a third place finish. He has committed himself to youth development since retirement.
7. Yu Darvish (Toshiro’s Pick)
A half-Iranian half-Japanese baseball pitcher for the Texas Rangers and Japan’s National team. A two-time world champion for his country, he has a large arsenal of pitches.

A Chilean soccer star who led his country to two World Cups. He is further revered for standing up to military dictator Augusto Pinochet.
