It is widely known but rarely acknowledged that is inherently funny or humorous is in fact what is shocking. Shakespeare noted that humour is the breaking of a pattern (as such the audience is then shocked by the change and laugh). However, most comedy today on American television is played out and topically ‘safe’. They address no issues and their laugh-tracks are an offense to actually talented comedians. The modern sitcom (with very few exceptions) is nauseating for the eyes and toxic for the mind. So you can see why I am completely enamoured with Amy Schumer. Her TV show Inside Amy is far more than refreshing break of the humdrum norm of adolescent-minded comedy.
The most powerful part of Amy’s comedy, aside from being delightfully entertaining, is her resolute self-confidence in open defiance of the world. That is not an easy stand to make in an entertainment world where some actresses, like Kaley Cuoco feel that there is no discrimination against women and that equality has been achieved. The entertainment world can create a bubble that insulates that stars from the struggles of the real world. So while Kaley Cuoco may feel that she has not been discriminated against, women face these challenges everyday. Amy Schumer connects with her audience, not from inside a media bubble, but from a very real place. All of this makes her comedy a palpable revolution against the institutionalization of the gender gap. Amy Schumer is a modern day revolutionary, she does not require anything other than her sense of humour and a medium to broadcast it. But in the process she changes the world around her by empowering those who are too oft ignored or marginalized. Amy Schumer’s comedy is not for women, instead just like feminism and women’s rights, it is for the betterment of society and for making the world a little more egalitarian.
